The MicroMemphis Experience.... as seen through the eyes of Michael G. Lander
In the Fall 2012 Semester, I joined the staff of other aspiring journalists at the University of Memphis and became a MicroMemphis Reporter. MicroMemphis is a hyperlocal news site that operates out of the University of Memphis Department of Journalism. It has been focusing its attention, since its inception, on the Cooper-Young Neighborhood in Memphis.
Cooper-Young is a diverse neighborhood, named after the intersection of Cooper and Young Avenue, and is located in the Midtown area of Memphis. It was identified by the American Planning Association in 2012 as one of the 10 Great Neighborhoods in the U.S.
As a MicroMemphis Reporter, I covered the Sports and Recreation beat in Cooper-Young, and occasionally a little more. This MicroMemphis class was led by professors Lurene Kelley and David Royer. Here is a link to the MicroMemphis website: http://cooperyoung.weebly.com/.

Before my MicroMemphis experience, I did not know much about the Cooper-Young Neighborhood. For me, that quickly changed, however, after I became one of the MicroMemphis Reporters. After attending my first Light-the-Way party and Cooper-Young Festival in October 2012, I was completely captivated by Cooper-Young and have been eager to learn more about this wonderfully eclectic place in the heart of Memphis.
As a MicroMemphis Reporter, for the 2012 Fall Semester, I found plenty of stories to write about in the Cooper-Young Neighborhood. Altogether, I wrote nine (9) stories that included the following:
Cooper-Young residents host Light-the-Way parties
Cooper-Young Fest draws crowd for food, art, and music
Bike lanes expected to be done soon in Cooper-Young
Cafe Ole hosts 5k run/walk for Ronald McDonald House
Star Runners trains and prepares Memphis area runners
Bike Polo finds a home in Cooper-Young
inbalance Fitness offers specialized exercise programs and service
House of Mews 9th Annual Meowathon 5K Run/Walk brings out cat-lovers, supporters
Cooper-Young's Midtown ATA Martial Arts teaches Taekwondo, leadership development and more
To see all of the stories and projects that I was involved with during the time that I have been a MicroMemphis Reporter, here is the link to a compilation of them via Storify: http://storify.com/mglander . More can also be found on tumblr at: http://micromemphis.tumblr.com/.
In addition to the stories, identified above, I also collaborated on a Kroc Center close to completion story with fellow-MicroMemphis Reporter, Dustin Azlin. I contributed some information and links on this coverage and took the pictures that were used in the story. Previous to this, I had also created two (2) photo slideshows. One of these was on the graffiti in Cooper-Young and the other was on the 2012 Cooper-Young weekend events. Other projects that I did in the MicroMemphis class included two twitter scavenger hunts and my experience as the Social Media Manager.
Several of my photographs, that I took during my time with MicroMemphis, were also picked up and included in stories by Lamplighter and WMC-TV.
